Youngs Barley Wine Beer Kit delivers an extra-strong ale which is coppery, tawny or dark brown.
It is an old-style English ale, rich, dark, and malty in taste and has barley's flavour and tangy nature.
This beer brewing kit requires the addition of 1 kg of brewing sugar, producing up to 24 pints of homebrewed real ale and a little sugar at the stage of priming the bottles or barrel.
The kit contains beer yeast and 1.5 kg of hopped malt extract.

If you want to experience a beer with better malt flavour, body, head retention and mouthfeel, we recommend swapping out the sugar for dried spray malt extract, liquid malt extract or beer enhancer.

Ready In Around 14 Days
Drink unchilled to appreciate its rich body and flavour fully.

What is the ABV of Young's barley wine?

The alcohol content can be increased (for that special occasion) from around 6.5ABV to 9.5ABV by reducing the output by 25% from 24 pints to 18 pints.
Do not add more sugar, which dilutes the hop flavour and causes undue sweetness.

Allergy Advice: May contain Barley & other Cereals containing Gluten.

Peter C
I've brewed many gallons of barley wine from various brewmakers. This one is good, almost great. It's quite a quick brew to ferment taking no more than five to six days to calm down and then another day or so to finish its ferment. It responds well to priming. I do it in a pressure barrel. The resultant brew comes out as a beautiful chestnut brown colour after leaving it as long as you are physically and mentally able to allow it to mature in the barrel. The taste is what you expect from a barley wine. Good, almost well rounded even after two weeks sitting in the barrel. The slight let down is a back of the tongue hint of a coppery tang that harkened to the days of the Whitbread Barley wine. Obviously it comes down to personal taste. For me, I've brewed and tasted better.
