23 Litre / 5 Gallon PLASTIC PET Carboy

5-gallon Demijohn / Carboy WITHOUT LID - Lids are available separately.
Airlocks are available separately.

A carboy is a container for storing and transporting liquids, typically wine or beer, with a narrow neck and a wide body.
The carboy may have a handle or not and often comes with a lid that can be secured with a rubber stopper.
Plastic carboys are popular among homebrewers and winemakers because they are lightweight, shatterproof, and less expensive than glass demijohns.
They are also easy to clean and sanitise, making them a practical choice for storing and fermenting liquids.
However, it's worth noting that these carboys may not be suitable for long-term storage of some types of liquids, as the plastic can be permeable to oxygen and may affect the flavour of the contents. It's always best to check the compatibility of the plastic with the liquid you intend to store before using these demijohns.

Homebrew Plastic Carboy

Home brewing using these demijohns is possible, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind to ensure a successful brew:

  • Choose the correct type of material: Not all materials are suitable for home brewing. Look for carboys made from food-grade plastic, such as PET or HDPE. These materials are safe for storing food and beverages and are less likely to leach chemicals into your brew.
  • Ensure proper sanitation: Just like glass demijohns, cleaning and sanitising plastic demijohns before use is essential.
  • Use a cleaning solution for brewing equipment, and rinse the demijohn thoroughly with hot water.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: These carboys can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, which can cause it to warp or crack.
  • Avoid exposing your demijohn to high heat or cold temperatures, and store it in a cool, dry place.
  • Be cautious when handling: These carboys are more prone to damage than glass ones, so handle them carefully to avoid cracking or breaking.
  • Use a carrying handle or strap to move the carboy, and secure the lid tightly to prevent spills.
  • Pet demijohns can be a good option for home brewing, as they are lightweight and less fragile than glass.
  • Just be sure to choose the right type of material, properly sanitise the demijohn, and handle it carefully to ensure a successful brew.
