IPA's origins came about through necessity during the English occupation of India. The occupying force was desperate for a tasty drink to quench their thirst. However, the beers which were being shipped did not arrive in good condition due to the perilous nature of the journey and the heat.
Eventually, a brew with a much-increased volume of hops was made, and it was thought correctly that this recipe would be able to stand the vagaries of the journey and it was an instant success. The increased amount of hops gives IPA it’s distinct hoppy taste.
