CARAMALT 500g Thomas Fawcett Malt(crushed or uncrushed grain)

Freshly crushed Malt by Brew Mart

Caramalt, also known as caramel malt, is a type of speciality malt used in the brewing of beer. It's a common ingredient in the brewing process that contributes to the final beer product's flavour, colour, and aroma. Caramalt is produced by heating and kilning malted barley to develop caramelized sugars and flavours.

Here are some critical points about caramalt:

  1. Flavour and Color: Caramalt adds sweetness, caramel, toffee, and sometimes nutty flavours to the beer. It also imparts a deep amber to reddish-brown colour to the final product.
  2. Sugar Conversion: During the kilning process, the starches present in the malted barley are converted into sugars. As the sugars are heated, they undergo Maillard reactions, which create caramel flavours and colours.
  3. Unfermentable Sugars: This malt often contains sugars not readily fermentable by yeast. Unfermented sugars mean that some of the sweetness and flavour from caramel remains in the finished beer, even after fermentation.
  4. Body and Mouthfeel: This  malt can enhance the body and mouthfeel of the beer, giving it a fuller and smoother texture.
  5. Types and Varieties: Various types and varieties of this malt are available, each with different colour and flavour profiles. The choice of caramalt depends on the beer's desired characteristics.
  6. Usage: Brewers use this malt in different quantities depending on the style of beer they are creating. Lighter beers might use smaller amounts for colour and subtle flavour, while darker beers like porters and stouts might use more for colour and a pronounced caramalt taste.
  7. Typical Beers: This malt is used in various beer styles, including pale ales, amber ales, brown ales, and other types that benefit from its colour, flavour, and body contributions.

Remember that the exact characteristics of caramalt can vary depending on the specific maltster and the malting process they use. Brewers often experiment with different types and amounts of speciality malts, including this malt, to achieve their desired flavour and colour profiles.

Caramalt is a pale crystal malt suited for brewing pale ales and the most bitter styles of beers.

Due to its low EBC, it won't darken the colour of the beer but should not be more than 20% of the grain bill.

Steeping is an option when brewing with malt extract.

Use together with crystal and roasted rye malts to brew the classic German top-fermented rye beer " Roggenbier" or in smaller amounts to add exciting flavours to other beers.
